Launched on Marathon day 21st April 2013 in central London they caused quite a stir and can be seen working in and around Wallington providing daily inspiration for the local community.

The Weir Archer Academy will be based at the Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium in Surrey, focusing on athletes from all Paralympic disciplines in south London.

They will also run training camps for UK youngsters and coaches. ”I want this to be my legacy so that London [2012] is not just a one-off,” Weir told BBC Sport

“There are literally thousands of potential athletes out there who are just waiting to be discovered and I want to help with that. I’m looking at the future and the Paralympics that are coming up because I want us to have a big squad in Rio [in 2016] and beyond.”

Now is when the real work starts. A group of school children will be tasked with the day to day care of the eggs. This will involve checking the temperature and water quality and using a turkey baster to remove any eggs that dont make it.

If you look closely at the eggs, you can see two black dots. These are the baby trout’s eyes. As the development continues we should start to see more going on inside the eggs.

The eggs are about 5 mm wide and there are a lot of them. They are sitting in a net on the side of the tank. This prevents them from being sucked into the filter and makes it easier for the children to check.

The eggs need a lot of darkness at this stage so the tank has been wrapped. This also helps with keeping to water below 10 degrees.  When the eggs start to hatch, we can un-wrap the tank

Following last weeks broken chiller the eggs that should have arrived on the 8th have been delayed.

Penta’s Chris Dodge went and swapped over the broken chiller last week just in time for the weekend.

A check of the tank this morning (14th Jan) shows a water temperature of 9 degrees. Much better than the 21 degrees from last week.

Pumps and filters are all up and running  and so all we need now are the eggs.

They should be going into the tank this week.

Penta’s Chris Dodge was due to collect the eggs and deliver them to the tank around lunch time today.

As the school has been closed for the Christmas period yesterday was the first chance to see how the tank has settled following its initial setup last year.

A quick glance at the tank and disaster. The water temperature was a warm 21 degrees. OK for tropical fish but a little on the warm side for trout eggs unless you want them poached

It appears that the chiller died.

The chiller is the large grey box under the table. This works in the same way as a fridge and cools water held within. This water is then circulated through an insulated pipe and into a coil in the tank before coming back into the chiller to re cool.

This should have kept the water temperature below 10 degrees. With temperatures as high as they are, we cannot take on the eggs.

A new chiller is on route and our eggs are being fostered in another tank. All being well, Chris will swap out the chiller, get the water temperature down and then collect the eggs on Friday.
